Buffalo Business First reports: “What took six years, eight months and 12 days to formulate became official in a matter of a few seconds Tuesday as Mayor Byron Brown officially signed documentation that made Buffalo’s ‘Green Code’ the new blueprint for development efforts within the city.

“Brown’s signature moment followed formal approval, on Dec. 27, by the Buffalo Common Council. Those actions were the capstones to an effort to revise the city’s development guidelines for the time since 1953.

“Buffalo is just the third U.S. city with a form-based development code, trailing only Miami and Denver. Read more about the details of the plan here.

“‘It’s about New Urbanism,’ Brown said. ‘It’s about renewal. It’s about revival. It’s about repurposing.’

“The code is byproduct of years of work by Brown and his development team, led by Brendan Mehaffy, Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning executive director. In all more than 242 meetings were held with input for nearly 6,000 participants including citizens and private development interests.

“‘We didn’t want to hear from just the 10 loudest voices,’ Mehaffy said. ‘We wanted to hear from all the voices.'”
