Typically at the invitation of local officials or a community group, a team from Partners for a Livable Western New York will conduct an interactive walk of a neighborhood, commercial street, village or town center, to provide ideas and participate in a dialogue on how to improve land-use and the built environment.
Through 2016, over 30 walks have been completed in Western New York communities, from the village of Youngstown to the city of Dunkirk and from Buffalo’s west side neighborhoods to the villages of Geneseo and Perry.
Engagement usually begins on a weekend morning with a orientation lecture by the members of the Partners team which identifies and explores the land-use and built-environment concerns of local attendees. Groups of walkers are formed, each accompanied by one or more members of the Partners team, and the groups walk for about 90 minutes. The emphasis is on observation, problem-solving, and an exchange of ideas. Everyone then reassembles to hear the findings and recommendations of the team, and finally to actively discuss how the community can implement change. The program usually ends in the early afternoon.
Within a few days, a written summary of the walk, findings, and recommendations is delivered to the client.

We sponsor and present educational programs, often with nationally and internationally known planners, architects, developers, and authors.
We've organized several large conferences, including a series of programs in Buffalo and Niagara Falls, and a 2012 New Urbanism conference at the Chautauqua Institution. We were also the host committee for CNU 22: the 2014 Congress for the New Urbanism, attracting 1500 people from 19 countries to the Buffalo area.
